Of note, 39 percent of the graduates were adult learners (defined as 25 years of age or older), 11 percent were first generation graduates, and more than 50 percent received some form of financial assistance to attend Virginia Western.*

More than 400 graduates attended Virginia Western’s 58th commencement, held Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Berglund Center in Roanoke. The ceremony honored graduates who completed their degrees and certificates during fall 2023 and spring 2024, as well as students projected to complete during the summer 2024.

Briana Wood, a 2024 graduate who received an Associate of Applied Science in Mechatronics Systems Engineering Technology: Design Engineering, welcomed students, and Virginia Sen. Chris Head provided the keynote address.

Wood shared from her personal story of a second start toward pursuing a degree. “If anyone out there is struggling to find their career path, I encourage you to take a step back and look at what you enjoy doing in your spare time, and find a way to turn your interests into a career,” she said. “My initial missteps were a blessing in disguise. Had I not failed, I would have never gotten the opportunity to do what I love and meet some amazing people along the way.”

A new addition to this year’s commencement exercises was a poem reading from Chanlee Luu, Virginia Western’s 2024 Poet Laureate. A posthumous honorary degree was also conferred to John Francis Jr., who served on the Local Advisory Board from 2018 until his passing this year. His wife of 47 years, Rosemary, was in attendance and accepted the degree in his honor.

From Roanoke College:

·Ö·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê President Robert Sandel was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Roanoke College during its Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4, in appreciation for his immense contributions to education across the region. For decades, Sandel has been a champion for expanding access to higher learning and building regional partnerships to support student success.

Virginia Western and Roanoke College are longtime allies in that pursuit. Nearly 7% of Saturday’s graduates started their college journey at Virginia Western before transferring to Roanoke College to earn a four-year degree. Roanoke College presented degrees to 406 students Saturday.

"I'm just thrilled that today he is officially a Maroon,
“I’m just thrilled that today he is officially a Maroon,” Roanoke College President Frank Shushok Jr. said of Virginia Western President Robert Sandel, when presenting him with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Courtesy of Roanoke College.

The two schools recently announced plans to expand on that good work with , a new initiative designed to create a seamless transfer path for Virginia Western students.

“Bobby has long held Roanoke College in his heart,” said Roanoke College President Frank Shushok Jr. “Time and time again, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to our institutions’ mutual success and, more importantly, the success of all students.”

“I’m just thrilled that today he is officially a Maroon.”

Sandel, after being bestowed with the recognition, led the crowd in the signature call-and-response that can be heard often on campus: “Here we go … Maroons!”

The following is the citation’s text:

Dr. Sandel has been recognized for his vision and accomplishments, including being named Roanoke City’s Citizen of the Year in 2013 and receiving the Roanoke/Blacksburg Technology Council’s prestigious Ruby Award. Nine students rode Amtrak from Roanoke to Washington’s Union Station with college staff. The students who were selected to attend represent a variety of college leadership and learning programs.

The White House tour on Friday morning was the key event for the trip. After undergoing several rounds of security checks, the group admired historic rooms, artifacts and artwork.  Students also enjoyed talking with Secret Service agents, who were on the tour to provide security but to also answer questions about each room. The tour was organized with the assistance of Sen. Tim Kaine’s office and required a three-month advanced request.

In addition to visiting the White House, students toured other museums, monuments and governmental sites. Nicolas Maiolo, Roanoke City CCAP student and member of Appalachian Engineers student club, said, “I really enjoyed walking around the National Mall and seeing the architecture and historic buildings. But seeing the White House was a once in a lifetime experience. Plus the train ride was really smooth!”

The group also enjoyed seeking out new restaurants and enjoying the amenities that a large city has to offer — like riding the Metro to get to your destination. Elizabeth Morris is a Student Ambassador and a Roanoke County CCAP recipient who attended. It was her first visit to Washington, D.C. “This was a really great opportunity and I’m super thankful for the college organizing this,” she said. “I don’t know if I would have ever had the chance to see these places without the support of the college.” While she really enjoyed the monuments and historic sites, she said she most enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. “The best moment for me was sitting down to have a meal together and traveling with new people.”

Virginia Western students have a variety of leadership and co-curricular learning programs through the Student Life Center.  This trip was one of many student activities provided by the college this year.

Student Activities Coordinator Natasha Lee planned the experience. “I get tremendous joy from coordinating activities for our students. I care about their experience at Virginia Western, and I want to provide the best opportunities for them to learn and grow.  The students on this trip were not only seeing a historic site, but many were navigating public transportation or even walking in a large city for the first time.  I also observed students needing to communicate, share opinions and compromise as they decided what sites to visit or where to eat lunch. These small interactions help our students become stronger in their communication and teamwork skills — which carry over to the classroom and in the workplace,” she shared.

In addition to the organizations already mentioned, students on the trip represented these Virginia Western organizations: Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, TRIO Student Support Services, Fralin Futures Scholars, Community College Innovation Challenge team. They also represented a variety of majors in healthcare, science and business. For more information, contact the Student Activities Coordinator Natasha Lee at or 540-857-6326.

Hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE), more than two dozen individuals, families, and organizations have earned the 2024 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. The awards were presented at a luncheon ceremony in Richmond on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. VCCS Chancellor Dr. David Doré served as emcee, and The Honorable Maurice Jones was featured as the keynote speaker.

“Virginia’s growth, prosperity, and well-being depend on the success of our community college system and the success of our students,” said Jones. “From childcare and housing assistance to reducing food insecurity, we must care and invest in the whole student for students and the Commonwealth to be successful.”

This year’s class of distinguished philanthropy leaders has collectively contributed $17 million to Virginia’s Community Colleges.

Virginia Western President Dr. Robert H. Sandel praised the Ellett Family — Mr. Frank T. and Mrs. Lucy R. Ellett; Mr. Frank R. (Russ) and Mrs. Heather Ellett — for dedicating generations of service to the community, higher education and Virginia Western. “They have been a part of the College since its inception,” Sandel said. “Their commitment over generations to the welfare of our students and our Commonwealth has been exemplary.”

Lucy’s grandfather and Russ’ great-grandfather was Col. J. Sinclair Brown, Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates in the 1930s and a stalwart advocate for education and fiscal growth. The College’s Brown Library is named for him. Lucy’s father, William S. Russell, was the first Chair of Virginia Western’s inaugural Local Advisory Board (1966-71). Today, Russ, President of Excel Truck Group, serves as the current Vice Chair of Virginia Western’s Educational Foundation Board of Directors.

Russ and Heather have significantly supported both Virginia Western’s Community College Access Program and the Virginia Western Forward Permanent Endowment Fund (unrestricted permanent endowment). The Elletts were additionally recognized by the Virginia Western Educational Foundation, receiving the annual Community Impact Award at a ceremony April 24, 2024.

Asked about his support of the College, Russ Ellett said, “I feel it is so important to help students gain life-changing skills so they can provide for their families and build a good life. If you care about the Roanoke Valley and you care about people, supporting Virginia Western makes sense.”

The ·Ö·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê Educational Foundation has named Yolonda L. Weaver, D.D.S., (’94) as recipient of the College’s 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award.

The Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 2006 by the Virginia Western Alumni Association and recognizes ·Ö·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê alumni and former students who have attained extraordinary distinction in their professional field or life. The award is intended to showcase the diversity of Virginia Western graduates and their range of influence on our region.

Yolonda L. Weaver, D.D.S., ('94)
Yolonda L. Weaver, D.D.S., (’94)

Dr. Weaver’s journey at Virginia Western began in 1992, when she embarked on her path in dental hygiene. At the time she applied to the program, Dr. Weaver was a dental assistant in her hometown of Winchester. She loved the dental profession and working with patients, and wanted to return home after graduation to serve her community. Upon graduation with an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene in 1994, Dr. Weaver fulfilled her goal and returned to Winchester, where she practiced dental hygiene for five years.

While continuing to work as a registered dental hygienist, Dr. Weaver completed her prerequisite coursework and earned her bachelor’s degree from Radford University in 1999. Her thirst for knowledge led her to the University of Tennessee’s Health Science Center School of Dentistry in Memphis, Tenn., where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2003.

“Yolonda came into the program as a first-generation college student and an individual eager to expand her knowledge base, improve her skills and provide the best treatment possible to the individuals in her care,” recalled Martha H. Sullivan, now Dean of Virginia Western’s School of Health Professions but then a member of the Dental Hygiene faculty. “She was outstanding in the classroom, and has become a consummate professional and a role model for all.”

In 2005, after marrying and relocating to Northern Virginia, Dr. Weaver began working as an associate dentist in Reston before seizing the opportunity to acquire Fairfax Dental Center in 2008. Since then, her practice has flourished and she has been named “Top Dentist” by Washingtonian, Virginia Living and Northern Virginia magazines for the past 14 years.

Throughout her career, Dr. Weaver has volunteered at local dental clinics and programs, including Give Kids a Smile Day and Missions of Mercy. Her dedication to serving the underserved and improving access to dental care exemplifies her commitment to the well-being of her community.

Currently residing in Fairfax with her husband, two sons and two beloved dogs, Dr. Weaver continues to make a difference in the lives of those around her.

“I believe Dr. Weaver exemplifies the qualities of academic excellence, integrity and commitment to her profession and community that ·Ö·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê seeks in recognizing distinguished alumni,” wrote Anne Kornegay Bartron, a retired Virginia Western Associate Professor and Dean, in her nominating letter. “It was my privilege to be one of her instructors during her time in the program, to know Yolonda as a student and after graduation; she certainly is one of the program’s most memorable graduates during my tenure as program director.”

Dr. Weaver was honored April 24, 2024, at the Educational Foundation’s annual Awards Ceremony and Reception in Whitman Theater. More than 170 student scholarship recipients were recognized at the event, which included the premiere of a short film, “Work and School: Finding the Delicate Balance.” Directed by Angel David Verde, the film features the stories of five Virginia Western scholarship recipients as they navigate academics, family life and a job. It is viewable at virginiawestern.edu/foundation.

I hope this becomes a model for future partnerships with colleges and local industry.”

“Virginia Western is grateful for the opportunity to help meet healthcare needs in Mountain Gateway’s service region,” said Dr. Robert H. Sandel, president of ·Ö·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê. “The Medical Laboratory Technology Program has had a positive impact in the Roanoke Valley for the past six years, with a 100% job placement rate. The program is fully accredited by the National Association for the Advancement of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and our accreditors have spoken to the high quality of Virginia Western’s program, granting a 10-year accreditation, which is the maximum allowed by NAACLS.”

The MLT Program is ideal for those interested in healthcare careers or with certifications in phlebotomy, nurse aide, or medical assistant. Success in this program requires a strong interest in science, attention to detail, organizational skills, manual dexterity, multitasking abilities, and proficiency in written and verbal communication.

Medical Laboratory Technologists carry out diagnostic testing on the blood and body fluids of patients. Their role enables physicians to make accurate diagnoses, provide appropriate treatment, and follow up with patients. MLTs have a range of employment opportunities in various settings such as hospital clinical laboratories, urgent care facilities, doctor’s offices, large corporation labs such as Quest and LabCorp, and the American Red Cross.

Lee Higginbotham, CEO of LewisGale Hospital Alleghany, speaks about the partnership.

“We are proud to partner with our community college system, providing valuable space, training, and connections for medical lab students,” Lee Higginbotham, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany’s chief executive officer said. “We have a continuing need for trained lab professionals in our facilities, and we look forward to nurturing this relationship and providing future job opportunities.”

The MLT Program stands out in the healthcare industry since MLTs generally do not have direct patient interaction in a clinical or hospital environment. Additionally, the average hourly salary for an MLT is approximately $23.41.

General education courses required for the program include College Success Skills, Human Anatomy, Chemistry, First Aid and CPR, College Writing, and Phlebotomy. Upon completion of the Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology Program, graduates have the option to enter the workforce as a medical laboratory technologist or transfer to a four-year college in a medical laboratory science (MLS) program to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
